Apprenticeship Requirements

Most applicants seeking electrician licensure choose to complete apprenticeship programs as a way to gain experience.

You can become an apprentice through the Utah Electrical Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (JATC) or the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

To be eligible for applying for these programs, you must be at least 17 years old and have your high school diploma (or its equivalent). Demonstrating passing grades of algebra, as well as scores of the electrical industry aptitude test is also a major requirement.

Journeyman Electrician Requirements

To be eligible for a journeyman electrician license, you must have at least four years of supervised work experience as an apprentice. An alternative is showing proof (Employer’s Verification Form) of eight-year legal work experience.

In case you want to apply for a residential journeyman electrician license, you must have two years of work experience as an apprentice or four years of supervised work experience.

Master Electrician Requirements

If you want to obtain a master electrician license, then you must have four years (8,000 hours) of practical experience as a journeyman electrician or an Associate degree, along with two years of experience.

Holding a Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited electrical engineering program and 2000 hours of experience can also be an option.

Applications

Once you meet the requirements for your desired type of license, you are to submit the application for it. To clarify, you must submit the completed application form to the Utah Department of Commerce, Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL).

Examinations

The state of Utah has reciprocity agreements for Master Electrician licenses with these states: Idaho, Oregon and Wyoming.

The state also has reciprocity agreements for Journeyman Electrician licenses with the following states: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota and Wyoming.
